Burnham Beeches Moat Autumn Panorama

A row of Beech and Whitebeam trees bathed in autumn sunshine along Hartley Court Moat in Burnham Beeches woods. The line of mostly coppiced Beech trees follows the moat, which originally would have protected a homestead dating from the 12th to 14th Centuries from intrusion by deer and wild boar into the inner area used for growing crop and living. There was a defensive palisade further out from the moat to protect against more aggressive intruders.
